Chichén Itzá

(in Maya, Chi means mouth, Chén means well and Itza is the name of the people that founded the city in the year 534 ap JC)

Chichén Itza is in the North of Yucatán to 120 km of Mérida. From the 10th century, Chichén Itza takes again its role of religious and cultural center of Yucatán. Civilizations for example, Toltèques or the Mayas, lived there.

An enormous well, called Cenote Sagrado, with the vertical walls a 20 meters depth is there. At the time of drynesses, the Mayas made human sacrifices, especially women and children for their gods, during religious ceremonies.
